Day 05 - Sun - 09/20/26 - Hubbard Glacier
Overnight we arrived at Yakutat Bay at the entrance to the viewing of the Hubbard Glacier. From our inside stateroom's TV screen of the bow camera, we could see that the weather was not very good. It was raining and the clouds were very low. So we slowly got ready for our day. We ate breakfast in the LIDO and sat with a couple from Adelaide who we met in town yesterday. We had a pleasant chat with them before excusing ourselves to got down to the Wajang theater where I ended up leading the interdenominational service which had about 25 participants. Of course, the main attraction today was the glacier and people were definitely bundled up for the weather.
After the service, I changed into cold weather clothes and took my ca,eras outside to get views of the glacier/ It was wet, rainy, and cold. I took a few pictures, and observed a couple of calvings. Our viewpoint this year was about a mile closer than last year on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Holly was giving scenic commentary and she told me that there were no wildlife sightings this day.
Around 10am, the bridge team rotated the ship 180º and the ship headed out to the open seas of the Gulf of Alaska. Once there, the water got much rougher and many people became squeamish.
In the afternoon Holly presented her port talk on Anchorage and Dr. Douglas presented a talk on Alaska Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and other Natural Disasters. Motion sickness bags were placed at every elevator. The rough seas continued throughout the day and the evening cast show was canceled and the classical string trio,Vivace, filled in for them with a wonderful set.
After their set, we listened to the tail end of Marcel's Piano bar set. For his second set, the piano was way too loud and overpowered his vocals, so we left and returned to our stateroom.
Tomorrow we'll be in Valdez and we have an excursion planned for the afternoon. We'll walk the town in the morning.
